START SMALL · BUILD SOMETHING USEFUL

What Is Vibe Coding? A Beginner’s Guide

Vibe coding means using ordinary language to ask AI to write or change software. You describe the result, try what it produces, and give feedback. You do not need to memorize every command to begin, but you do need to check whether the result actually works.

Think of it as giving instructions to a very fast helper

Imagine asking someone to make a shopping list app. “Make an amazing app” leaves almost every decision to your helper. “Make a page where I can add an item, mark it bought, and delete it” gives you something you can check. AI can produce code quickly; speed does not tell you whether that code is correct.

Start with one person, one problem and one result

Choose a problem you understand. A reading list for yourself is easier to judge than a platform for thousands of strangers. Write one sentence: “I want to keep track of three books I plan to read.” For the first version, leave out accounts, payments, sharing and notifications. Each extra feature creates more things that can go wrong.

Give the AI a clear first request

This is a worked example you can adapt. The goal is a small local page, not a production service.

Check behavior, not just appearance

Add “The Little Prince”: it should appear once. Add an empty value: no blank row should appear. Add a second book and remove the first: the second should remain. Reload the page. If your list disappears, you have discovered a missing requirement, not necessarily an AI failure: this first request did not ask for saving. Ask for saving separately after the basic list works.

When something breaks, describe what you saw

A useful error report says what you did, what happened and what you expected. For example: “After I click Add with an empty input, an empty row appears. I expected the list to remain unchanged. Fix only this behavior and explain what changed.” Keep a working copy before each change. Do not paste passwords or secret API keys into a public project.

What do you still need to learn?

Learn what a file is, how to open your project, how to read an error and how to test one behavior. These small skills make your instructions much better. Before handling other people’s money or personal information, learn the relevant security basics and get a competent review. A convincing demo is not the same as a reliable public service.
